Shannon Reilly, the Saline High School Female Athlete of the Month for December is full of ambition and energy. She is currently a junior, and is on the Saline Field Hockey team. Shannon confesses that at first she detested the sport. At the time she started playing in sixth grade, her Mom was the coach and she made Shannon join. However, as Shannon continued to play the game, she came to love it and now thoroughly enjoys the sport. In addition to Field Hockey, Shannon is also on the Saline varsity basketball team. She has been named Division 2, 1st team all-state two years in a row and team MVP two years in a row, as well as varsity team captain this year. Her team also won the Division 2 state championship in double overtime this season.
Shannon has two favorite subjects in school; English and U.S. History. She favors English because she loves to write stories, and History because she thinks learning about our country’s history is “really cool”.
Although she has not settled on a specific college yet, with a GPA of 3.73, Shannon plans on attending a college with “big sports and lots to do”. She plans to continue playing Field Hockey in college. She is currently involved in National Honor Society and is on the gold honor roll.
Shannon lives with her Mom, Erica Reilly, who is the Saline High School Head Varsity Hockey coach, her Dad, Jim Reilly and her two younger sisters, Devin and Erin, both of whom also play field hockey.
Although Shannon states that Michigan is her favorite team, she also roots for the Hawkeyes since both her parents attended Iowa.
When asked her advice for other students trying to decide whether to participate in sports, Shannon stated, “I would say to totally try it.  You might end up surprising yourself and loving it! You make so many new friends through sports and you learn a lot about the game and about yourself as a player.”
Shannon and her family are delighted that she has been chosen as the December Saline High School Female Athlete of the Month.
