Council approves same millage rate

By Saline Eagel staff

In May, the Saline City Council approved a millage rate of 16.288 for the 2015-16 fiscal year. That tax rate is the same as last year.
The general fund is expected to receive $8,456,000, mostly from property taxes. After paying the budgeted expenses, the general fund is expected to end with a fund balance of $1.8 million, about $10,000 higher than last year.
The city has the authority to levy an additional millage to pay for fire protection. This year, Saline will not levy any separate fire millage. The budget for Saline’s fire protection is listed at $342,000 which is Saline’s share of the Saline Area Fire Department’s budget.
The McDonald’s restaurant on Michigan Avenue is located inside the Saline city limits, but a small parcel it owns next to the restaurant, along Henry Street, is still part of Pittsfield Township. McDonald’s sent a request to the City of Saline asking that this parcel be annexed to the city.
An official from Pittsfield Township advised McDonald’s to ask for the annexation with the city, so apparently the township is not expected to contest it.
All the property owners adjacent to the McDonalds are already inside the Saline city limits.
In other action, the Saline City Council approved a bid from Camtronics of Detroit to install security equipment at city buildings, especially City Hall and the DPW. Camtronics submitted a bid to coordinate and upgrade the electronic lock systems for $5,000. This will include card readers and computer work.
